Asbestos works

Asbestos is a very hazardous to human health. In the Republic of Estonia, as well as elsewhere in the developed countries, there are laws in force to ensure safe performance of work with asbestos.

Legislation in Estonia.

Health and occupational safety requirements for asbestos work.

According to the information of European Agency for Safety and Health, in the UK alone, approximately 3,000 people die every year from diseases caused by exposure to asbestos, and the number is presumably growing to 10,000 by 2010. 25% of these people have never worked in construction or maintenance works.

In Sweden, more people die because of the late effects of exposure to asbestos than the total number of fatal accidents at work!!! Asbestos is thus extremely threatening to life.

Smoking is known to cause lung cancer, but the exposure to asbestos increases the risk of lung cancer many times. The smokers inhaling asbestos are 50 times more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers exposed to asbestos!!!

The European Commission has with its decision on 27.07.1999 decided to ban virtually all currently used types of asbestos. 5 types of asbestos have been banned in the EU since 1991. Chrysotile or white asbestos has so far been banned in 14 products, but now it has been decided to supplement the Directive and to include a total ban on the use of white asbestos.

Not many have heard about the health threat related to asbestos nor are able to protect himself/herself from its harmful effects. It is known that asbestos causes damages to cell membranes and tissues, resulting in a change in the DNA and enzyme systems, and asbestos dust inhalation causes diffuse fibrosis in the lung tissue (asbestosis) and diffuse thickening of the pleuralestme covering the lung. Today, asbestos is known as one of the worst cancer-promoting agent.

In Europe, each year about 10,000 people die from health damages caused by asbestos.

Some of the most commonly used asbestos-containing materials include: acoustical plasters, spray-coated insulating materials, fire walls, boiler insulation materials, pipes and electrical wiring insulation.
